Eveything you wanted to know but were too afraid to ask.

After a few increasingly lethargic efforts, the step refused to engage. Not catastrophic, but a nuisance, so in the glorious weather of today I decided to have a go at it.

3 bolts released the device from the frame, tho one sheared in the process. It was filthy.. just in front of a rear wheel, it is effectivly located in a wheel arch. Ridiculous, another point of proof that Germans have a sense of humour after all.

Anyway, 2 torx fittings release the motor from the gearbox. As it is a worm drive, I split them by unwinding the gearbox off the motor armature.
Once free, the motor spun happily on the switching, so on to the gearbox. It was completely jammed.

I found an 11/64 socket fitted perfectly onto the gear drive cog, so with a big wrench I ground the thing free.
Perhaps naughty, I tipped some engine oil into the gearbox and continued turning the stiff shaft. After a while it freed up enough so I put the motor back in position.

**NOTE** as it's a worm, you have to 'screw' it back in... it would not go fully home, so I applied the electric, [the up switch spins it up the right way] and it wound in perfectly. Manually it was just not working for me at all.

I ran the motor for a few minutes in both directions, knowing that there was oil present that hopefully in theory would work it's way into the shaft. It sounds like it did when we first got the bus, so I reckoned it was good enough to go.

Re-mounting the assembly was straightforward, and now the step is working fine again.

As an aside, it looks like the gearbox is locked shut with some weird riveting process that I really did not want to start messing about with. Effectivly a non refurbishable item.
